Athens lawyer and former Rep. John Barrow, D-Georgia, is a veteran campaigner. He served 14 years on the Athens-Clarke County Commission before being elected to Congress from his home district. And he was the Democratic runner-up for Georgia secretary of state last year.

Barrow and Georgia Court of Appeals Presiding Judge Sara Doyle are already campaigning for election in May 2020 for the seat that will be opened by Justice Robert Benham’s planned retirement in December. More candidates may come before the qualifying period next spring.

The two announced candidates for an open seat on the Georgia Supreme Court in 2020 have already raised more than half a million dollars combined.

Former U.S. Rep. John Barrow, D-Georgia, and Georgia Court of Appeals Presiding Judge Sara Doyle are seeking to win the seat that Justice Robert Benham will leave when he retires at the end of 2020. In the first reporting period that ended June 30, Barrow reported $304,100 raised, and Doyle reported $223,470.

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTGS) — Attorney and former Congressman John Barrow announced today his candidacy for the seat on the Georgia Supreme Court currently held by retiring Justice Robert Benham. The nonpartisan election will take place at the same time as next year’s general primary election, on May 19.

“An appellate court depends on the combined experience of its judges to arrive at decisions that are fair and just,” said Barrow. “When Justice Benham retires, the Supreme Court will lose almost as much experience as the rest of the Court combined. That’s why I’m running – to offer my experience to help maintain the kind of balance we want in our Supreme Court.”

Last November was wrought with a number of hotly contested elections in the state of Georgia. One of which, the secretary of state race, went as far as a runoff. Democrat John Barrow finished as the runner-up in the election, and now the former congressman and Athens native has his eyes on the state Supreme Court.

Barrow is looking to replace Justice Robert Benham, whose retirement was announced last Friday in a press release from the court. Benham was appointed by Gov. Joe Frank Harris in 1989 and became the first African American on Georgia’s Supreme Court. Benham received his Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia.
